Clinical Practice

I completed my experiential clinical hours primarily in an outpatient primary care setting under the supervision of certified nurse practitioner preceptors. The majority of my hours were completed at Essentia Health MDC Gateway Clinic Primary Care through the University of Mary. Additional experiences included specialty and population‑focused settings as part of other clinical courses.

    • Primary setting: Outpatient primary care clinic (CHI St. Alexius Dickinson Clinic)

    • Additional settings: Specialty and population‑focused outpatient clinics (e.g., ENT, CVT Surgery and women’s/children’s health, depending on semester)

    • Patient populations: Neonates through older adults (newborn to late 80s)

    • Demographics: Diverse insurance coverage (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, uninsured) and varied racial/ethnic backgrounds

  • My clinical experiences included both acute and chronic care management across the lifespan. Common visit types included:

    • Annual and preventive wellness exams (adult, pediatric, and geriatric)

    • Episodic acute care visits (e.g., respiratory infections, musculoskeletal complaints, dermatologic concerns)

    • Chronic disease management (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, COPD)

    • Post‑hospital and emergency department follow‑ups

    • Sports physicals and pre‑operative examinations

    • Women’s health care, including gynecologic exams and Pap smears

    • Pediatric well‑child exams and immunizations

  • Description text goes hereThroughout my clinical hours, I participated at varying levels (primary >50%, shared 50/50, assisted, or observed) in:

    • Comprehensive and problem‑focused histories and physical exams

    • Medication management and patient education

    • Preventive screening and counseling

    • Procedures such as:

      • Pap smears

      • Toenail removal with digital block

      • Cryotherapy for wart removal

      • Punch biopsy of skin lesions

      • Vaginal cultures

Clinical decision‑making ranged from straightforward to moderate complexity, with regular consultation and case discussion with my preceptors.

  • Clinical encounters typically documented 20–45 minutes of direct patient care per visit, with additional preceptor consultation time. Based on the clinical logs provided, I completed multiple semesters of supervised clinical practice, cumulatively meeting the program’s experiential learning expectations.

    Total clinical hours completed: 1,000

Total clinical hour requirement for the program: 1,000
